My Experience on the GM Diet/ Cleanse

Since the new year ( yea, yea new years resolution style ) I had been following the 1,200 calorie weight loss plan. Basically I was calorie counting and between diet and exercise I was to consume no more then 1,200 calories a week to lose 1-2lbs a week. I had previously lost weight this way before. It seemed to have been working but I'm not sure I never actually got on a scale. One night, my co-worker mentioned she was thinking about doing a cleanse were you were supposed to lose 10+ pounds a week! When she mentioned it involved still being able to eat food and not just liquids I was instantly in. Getting a kick start on my weight loss I knew would be further motivation to keep losing weight because let's be honest, I like to see quick results. As I waited for Sarah to send me the cleanse info I went searching on my own and discovered this cleanse on Pinterest. It sounded similar to what Sarah described but was actually a slight variation. Sarah had found the GM Diet. Click to view the full diet plan and further explanation of how it works. I used my diet version for the 5th and 6th day that suggest chicken and turkey instead of beef like the GM diet says. Also I will be using the GM Diets day 7 which consist of brown rice rather then the miracle soup all day. Let me tell you about my 7 day journey!




Day 1 - Only Fruit:

I started this diet on a Monday. I spent my Sunday having two brunches and drinking mimosas, and my brunch crowd scared me out of grocery shopping on a Sunday so I was completely unprepared with food. I stopped at WaWa on the way into work and picked up two containers of mixed fruits and two apples. I killed all of the by the time lunch rolled around at 1pm except for one of the apples which turned out to be bad. THANKS WAWA. I had to run to Giant at lunch to stock up on fruits and veggies for tomorrow. By the end of my work day I knew I had to make the veggie soup that you could eat any day anytime or I was going to go nuts. It was almost intolerable to keep sticking fruit in my mouth. I was cranky, tired, and I had a headache. That soup was my saving grace.

What I Ate:

1/2 lb of Watermelon

Day 2 - Only Veggies

I slept like a rock and felt pretty decent when I woke up. I stocked up on my veggies and soup to eat at work. You get to start out this day by eating a baked potato with a bit of butter. THIS WAS LIKE HEAVEN. I don't even love baked potatoes, but it felt so good to eat something of substance. At first I was glad to be eating something besides fruit, but veggies get a little old too. Once again I was so greatful everytime I ate the soup. I found myself chugging down the broth, just savoring something with taste. This day was a lot more tolerable and I wasn't nearly as weak. I felt hungry but I could deal.

Day 3 - Fruits & Veggies

I felt amazing when I woke up on the third day. I was really busting with energy, I slept well and was ready to greet the world. I also found out I had lost 5 lbs! This day was pretty tolerable as well, but I was really ready to eat something different. If anything the craving for variety is what makes this diet hard.  Unfortunately when I got home I found out I had somehow gained 1lb! I blame it on the fact that towards the end of the day I was extremely bloated and felt pretty uncomfortable. I am afraid I wasn't drinking enough water. PS- You're going to pee a lot, but don't worry you don't have to park yourself at the toilet if you know what I mean.

What I Ate:

Day 4 - Bananas & Skim Milk or Weight Watchers Yogurt

Last night I made two banana smoothie from bananas and skim milk. This was a great lesson as I had never used my roomie's blender before and half of my first smoothie ended up all over our kitchen. Another note, I refrigerated them and the one I had for lunch got pretty thick and chunky. CREEPED ME OUT. I am going to say the fresher the better! I woke up with a lot of energy again but that quickly diminished. This day was rough. Most reviews I read said your cravings were gone this day. I felt weak and got a headache again. I did notice my body looked thinner, but the scale still wasn't reflecting any further weight loss. I also noticed the dark circles under my eyes, which I never have.

Day 5 - Chicken, Turkey, 6 Tomatoes

Today was ok. It was really nice to eat meat, it satisfied cravings more. Popping grape tomatoes helped keep me distracted also. I hate tomatoes and I feel like 2 containers of grape tomatoes isn't equal to 6 tomatoes, I did my best. I had a headache most of the day. I can't describe how I feel as bad, but I am not feeling at 100% strength that is for sure. I do feel guilty every time I think about eating unhealthy food. I am truly curious whether I will pig out at the end of this. So far no more weight loss showing on the scale, I see a change in my body though.

What I Ate:

Day 6: Chicken, Turkey, Veggies

I woke up this morning and promptly weighed myself, I was down to 8 lbs lost! My stomach was definitely flatter, my pants were sliding off my legs. I notice days that I am slightly more active I notice more weight loss. I was too scared to workout because I often felt weak during the day. People have recommended working out on the diet for better results. Today was definitely easier, way less hungry, less cravings. I'll admit I went out with a friend to see a band and she gave me about a half a cup of mac and cheese whoops! ( The Super Bowl is tomorrow anyway so I am screwed. ) We then walked a good mile to get to the band venue and then stood and bobbed for four hours, so I think I shed those calories. I also had two alcoholic cider drinks, depending on which version of the diet you find it seems small amounts of alcohol are allowed. PS- The band I saw, The Kopecky Family Band was well worth it! What I Ate:

Black Coffee

4 Turkey Dogs
Some Carrots
1 Bowl Vegetable Soup
2 Glasses Alcoholic Cider

Cheat: 1/2 cup mac and cheese

Day 7: Brown Rice, Fruit Juices, Veggies

So I'll admit I knew today was the Super Bowl and there was no way in hell I wasn't enjoying some party food. Basically my cleanse lasted 6 days and until 5:00 pm on the 7th day and I broke it by eating a Caramel Delight Girl Scout cookie, no better way to go. Regardless I feel I still got the full effect of this cleanse diet.

What I Ate:
Black coffee
water
2 cups of brown rice

....then the Super Bowl happened. I really didn't eat that poorly though.

Total Weight Loss Over 7 Days: 8 lbs

I lost 8lbs and I see a noticeable difference in my body. It is a great motivation to keep me going on the 1,200 calorie diet after this cleanse and even greater motivation to go to the gym and push harder. Overall I am happy I did this cleanse. This initial weight loss will be great starting point for me and the diet forced me to try new things. I made vegetable soup for the first time, used a blender to make a smoothie, and ate more fruits and vegetables then I ever would have before. I discovered a new love for turkey sausage. At moments I felt weak and I had some minor headaches but overall the struggles paid off. I would consider doing this again in a month or so if I felt I needed a further jump start. It was also really satisfying to see I had the will power to do something like this. If you have any questions about my experience feel free to ask!

    1. Hope you don't mind me asking, but I am curious. I am at the end of day 4 and I only lost 1/2kg. How much did you weigh when you started and was this diet a BIG change from what you normally eat?

  12. I am on day 3 now...I had a bad moment and had some hershey's chocolate, but I haven't been eating much at all so I think the limited calories should save me from my moment of weakness. Other than that I was good the first 2 days. I feel very good and I like this diet!

      Well I am not medical expert. But I would be careful on your period thought because I was weak enough from the low calorie intake and you'll be burning even more calories and energy on your period.
